5 THINGS TO DO WHEN THE HOLIDAYS AREN'T UPLIFTING

NAVIGATING THE HOLIDAYS WHEN JOY FEELS

OUT OF REACH

For many, the holiday season is one that is filled with joy, laughter, love, and celebration. Christmas traditions, festive decor, and the Hallmark Channel playing movies around the clock. The holiday season is often painted as a perfectly joyous time of year, but for others, this time of year can be a reminder of loss, stress, or unresolved family tension.

The holiday hustle can take its toll - overindulging in food, drink, or family time can leave you feeling exhausted, and the shorter days and lack of routine can make it even harder to find motivation and joy.

If you aren’t feeling quite as merry as you’d like this holiday season, here are five ways to take care of yourself, and support others who might be struggling this holiday season.

FIVE SELF-CARE TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

  1. Start a new tradition - The holidays don’t have to look any specific way. Instead of holding onto old expectations of what they “should” be, allow new traditions to emerge. Be present and open to experiences as they unfold, no matter how different they may be.

  2. Give back - The holidays are the perfect time to connect with others. Consider volunteering with a local non-profit organization (like ours!) or donate your time and talents to a cause you care about. Giving back can bring a sense of fulfillment and community to your holidays

  3. Set Boundaries - Rather than forcing yourself into uncomfortable situations this holiday, recognize that setting boundaries is good for EVERYONE. Rather than trying to do it all, pace yourself. Choose a few key activities that matter most and focus on those. Stick to your budget and your boundaries to avoid unnecessary stress or financial strain.

  4. Learn to say no - It’s easy to overcommit during the holiday season, but doing so can lead you straight into burnout. Prioritize what's truly important to you. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup and it's okay to take care of yourself first.

  5. Practice Self Care - Make your well-being a priority this year by getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, staying active and drinking plenty of water. These habits can boost your mood and energy levels throughout the season.

FIVE WAYS TO SUPPORT OTHERS DURING

THE HOLIDAYS

  1. Be present - Sometimes the best way to support someone is to simply be present and listen without judgement. Let them share what’s on their mind, and offer a compassionate ear. Hold space for them to express their feelings.

  2. Send handwritten notes - take a moment to write a personal note with encouraging words. A thoughtful message can go a long way in lifting someone’s spirits and letting them know you’re thinking of them.

  3. Share traditions - Sharing your own cherished holiday traditions or fond memories can help others feel connected. These conversations can spark nostalgia and remind people of the love and joy that can come with the season.

  4. Invite others out - sometimes all it takes is an invitation. Reach out and ask someone to join your for a small outing - whether its a cup of coffee, a walk, or a drive to look at holiday lights. Shared experiences create meaningful connections

  5. Recommend Help - If you notice someone struggling more than just a little, suggest seeking professional help. The holiday blues are real, and for some, the emotional strain can be deeper. If you or someone you know needs support, remember that services like Beacon for Hope are here to help.
